Over two years in the making and two postponements later, Big Boi was beginning to look a bit like Q-Tip in terms of taking ages to get his album out. Well friends, the wait is finally over. One mistake? The man probably wasted time and money taking so long on the album and it’s quite a disappointment. Almost every track on the disc has some definite potential and the production talent is definitely there, but overall, production value is just about the only asset.
With 16 years in the game and arguably the better half of the greatest hip-hop duo of all time (Outkast), the need for that pair is seen track after track. While the possibility of a hit or two is not out of the question, there are several with a great beat and hook, but they all end there. A man with a history of recording with such explosive dynamics that was especially apparent in Speakerboxx/The Love Below, this album leaves much to desire. For most other hip-hop artists, this would be a solid start, but a man like Big Boi is on another level and this album is definitely not up to par. Has the man lost his touch? That is something yet to be seen, but the smart money is on putting the tag team back together and stopping this solo work.
