Back with her sophomore album, Heart of My Own (Rough Trade Records), Basia Bulat continues to mix unique instrumentals with her ringing, sing-song vocals. The result is a heartfelt duet of music and lyrics in which each component compliments rather than competes with the other. In the second track “Run,” Bulat’s folky, Shakira-esque voice flirts with the background tambourine, and in “Gold Rush,” the combination of an echoing tone against the forceful guitar creates the illusion of a song that moves, running from beginning to end. “Go On” rocks an Irish-inspired sound, while “If Only You” plays like a country ditty.
Bulat’s talent includes her ability to fill an album with diverse songs without making a mess. Her lyrics avoid clichés about heartbreak and she expertly takes her voice from hushed whispers to near shouts without hesitation or flaw. The neat staccato sound in “Sparrow” and the range of softness to loudness in “Walk You Down” showcase her advanced vocal talents. Even when Bulat stays within a comfortable pitch range throughout most of the album, the instrumental beats and a sincere dedication to her chosen art form keep the music fresh. Regardless, Bulat has the musical chops to push another album to worldwide musical acclaim.
