Vitamin String Quartet

Vitamin String Quartet
VSQ Performs Lady Gaga

The Vitamin String Quartet, based out of Los Angeles, boasts an impressive list of releases. The classical string group has covered everything from classic artists like AC/DC and Elton John, to newer artists like Taking Back Sunday and No Doubt. The group can transform even the most contemporary music and transform it into beautiful, classical music. The act’s latest endeavor is VSQ Performs Lady Gaga (Vitamin Records), which was first released on iTunes only, but will also hit CD in mid-September.

The album string quartet covers of all of Lady Gaga’s top singles, such as “Poker Face” and “Telephone,” as well as some of her lesser-known songs like “Eh, Eh (Nothing Else I Can Say).” The strings add a creepy take on parts of “Paparazzi” and a sense of anticipation and excitement on “Poker Face.” The classical-like sound adds fun and creativity to the songs, while at the same time being true to string quartet music.

The album’s only flaw is that perhaps the Vitamin String Quartet should have waited another year to record this album since a few of the songs were not singles released by Lady Gaga. The quirky classical take on Lady Gaga’s already quirky pop music makes it difficult to envision where and who would listen to this album. Perhaps it’s appropriate for studying for finals, a Sunday visit at Grandma’s, or other situations when listening to Lady Gaga is not the most appropriate choice in music. Regardless of when this album would be played, it is worth a listen, even if for no other reason than the novelty of the album.
