Robyn
Body Talk, Pt. 1

“My drinkin’ is killing me.” With that one phrase, repeated over and over again, Robyn starts off her highly anticipated Body Talk, Pt. 1. “Don’t F***king Tell Me What To Do” proceeds to list all of the things that are killing Robyn, and presumably, her listeners. Who can’t relate to “these hours are killin’ me…ease up, you’re killin’ me”? The simple electronic beat that grounds the track keeps her moving along toward the climax of Robyn brashly stating the title. While it’s not an outstanding track, there’s a lot to be said for a catchy, simple, electronic track to start things off with a quiet bang.

The following track “Fembot” verges on the annoying side of her sound, but she redeems herself with “Dancing On My Own.” It’s got a melancholic theme about not being with the person you want, but there’s something promising about Robyn’s resolve to keep dancing, even if it’s on her own. Her disillusionment with romance continues into the next track “Cry When You Get Older,” which possesses a more developed beat, and it’s hard to beat lyrics that boast such truth as “love hurts when you do it right/you can cry when you get older.”

“Hang With Me” benefits from a great piano backing, and shows a more intimate side to Robyn’s voice, which is actually quite beautiful. It’s tracks like this one that makes a listener wonder why she wastes her time robo-singing through songs like “Fembot.” Save for those types of tracks on Body Talk, Pt. 1 though, Robyn’s put forth a decent album about love and loss—dance music’s two best friends.
