Rather than serving as Relapse’s successor, Eminem wisely changed the direction his seventh studio album would take and reintroduced himself to the music world in Recovery (Aftermath). Eminem also leaves behind his usual skits in between songs to focus more on the music, which are more emotional and less abrasive, a rarity of his. While many questioned if he could make a comeback following his last few lackluster albums, Recovery is sure to answer any doubts people may have had.
“Talkin’ 2 Myself” is one of the rawest and honest songs off the album. He not only shows his appreciation of his fans by apologizing for his last two albums, but he opens up about previously wanting to diss Kanye West and Lil Wayne over jealousy. He took the high road, though, and gave them kudos on the song. While some might view it as weakness, it shows how much he’s grown as a person and how it’s more about the music than anything else now.
Throughout the album Eminem also samples a lot of music, such as “What is Love” by Haddaway in his song “No Love” (featuring Lil Wayne). While at first it sounds like an odd combination, both rappers beautifully intertwine the song within the track to produce a dynamic hit. While at times the chorus in songs such as “Space Bound” and “So Bad” are unbearably cheesy, his beat and rap are on point and show an amazing new side to him.
The only flaws were the lyrically unimpressive “On Fire” and “Won’t Back Down,” whose beat and guest vocals by Pink clashed completely. And while Eminem isn’t 100 percent back to his old musical ways, Recovery shows that he is well on his way and is sure to silence any doubters.
