Broken Bells
Broken Bells

Campus Correspondent Review By Trevor Starnes,

It seems like everything Danger Mouse touches these days’ turns to gold. His collaboration with Cee-Lo (Gnarls Barkley) was a critically acclaimed masterpiece and now his tag team with Shins lead singer James Mercer is turning heads. The duo is a tad bit random, especially considering Danger Mouse is known for his eclectic mix of beats and energy and Mercer houses a melodic voice and laid back style. The match might not look good on paper, but what does paper know about music?
Broken Bells’ self-titled album starts with the single “The High Road,” which features a beat reminiscent of an ‘80s arcade game theme song. Danger Mouse’s beat is hypnotic, while Mercer’s voice is emotionally beautiful. “October” is the one song on the album that is reminiscent to The Shins, but at the same time, it has a bigger and enhanced sound with Danger Mouse putting his spin on the sound. “Sailing to Nowhere” is the trippiest song of the record with many beats all coming together to make a beautiful song.
Danger Mouse adds a powerful experimental punch to Mercer’s conservative roots, making the final project very inspiring. The two continue to impress fans all around that they are musical geniuses and that they can take ideas from two different ends of the spectrum and bring them together to make a magical record. This record is a direct representation of where the music scene is going and it is exhilarating to see where music takes us in the next couple of years.
