Kraftwerk
Trans Europe Express

Campus Correspondent CD review by Andy Argyrakis,
Campus Correspondent coordinator

As implied in the title of the electro-wizards’ 1977 album, Kraftwerk adapted wider European influence throughout Trans Europe Express (EMI), in turn, subconsciously expanding its reach throughout the territory at large. Perfect for train or tube riding, it serves as an travelers’ soundtrack through the chilling dings of “Europe Endless,” alongside the haunting “The Hall of Mirrors,” followed by the catchy comic relief of “Showroom Dummies.”

With the programmed grinds and klangs of “Metal on Metal,” Kraftwerk showcases a harder edge, though there’s plenty of atmospheric sweetness come “Franz Schubert.” Although the collection ends with just the minute long snapshot of “Endless Summer,” it leaves lasting memories of a remarkable electronic journey that continued to keep audiences for the relatively new electronic genre on its toes, while laying further blueprints of what was to come.

This remastered title is available individually or as part of the box set The Catalogue (EMI).
