Toro Y Moi
Causers of This

By Matt Conner

The children of musical globalization are finally taking hold. You could see this coming from a distance, as far-reaching influence and technology have both become increasingly pervasive. But it’s not until these last few years that acts like Sub Pop’s the Ruby Suns and Carpark’s Toro Y Moi have emerged to further blend sonic inspirations into entirely new creations.

Chaz Bundick, the 23-year-old South Carolina native behind Toro Y Moi, follows his artistic inclinations wherever they want to go, although they never leave the bedroom landscape entirely. Every creation maintains a sleepy, dreamy feel, no matter how much they dance and dive. “Imprint After” never quite wakes from its blissful sleep. “Lissoms” punches in all directions, yet never separates itself from its laptop origins. Yet it’s that unmovable film over everything that provides cohesion to Causers of This. It’s a smart, subdued debut that definitely sees Bundick as more than a side project. Instead, he’s an important part of a new cultural wave that will undoubtedly help define the next decade.
