Lil Wayne
Rebirth

By Joe Walker
Lil Wayne is an unrelenting egomaniac. Only complete self-consumption could have inspired Weezy to attempt a rock album. He’s dubbed a rock star solely on the basis of current popularity. Lil Wayne is not a rock star. He just couldn’t see past himself for looking at himself in the mirror. Had Wayne done more actual reflecting, he may have strongly considered aborting Rebirth. The knocked-up leadoff single “Prom Queen” is pregnant with bad lyrics and an even worse arrangement. It should have been indication enough of his vocal miscarriage. Wayne’s continued use of the Auto-Tune digitizing effect is simply T-painful, like on disfigured opening track “American Star.”
As it stands, Wayne distorts his voice plenty when he’s rapping. Over the right bass-laden production, it can be somewhat bearable. But most of the songs here make it sound as though Wayne is either gargling or drowning. The well runs dry on the punk-inspired offering “Get A Life.” Aside from the tolerable tirade “Drop The World” featuring Eminem, this whole album is forgettable. If you’ve never heard a truly terrible album before, Rebirth is your chance. But keep your hands close to your head while you listen. You’ll need to push them against your ears.
