Crazy Heart
By Jeff Niesel
Crazy Heart star Jeff Bridges recently won a well-deserved Golden Globe for his portrayal of a country music singer who’s down on his luck after an illustrious career. Bridges is really great in the role but perhaps the most remarkable thing is that the guy can actually sing. With the help of a vocal coach, he was able to handle the live performances in the film and didn’t have to have his singing parts dubbed. As a result, the film’s soundtrack, which T Bone Burnett (the guy who put the O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack together) produced, stands as yet more evidence to his talent.
Bridges nails numbers such as the sparse ballad “Hold On You” and “Somebody Else.” Co-star Colin Farrell also hired a vocal coach to get him through the film. Though Farrell doesn’t sing as much as Bridges, his contributions are still significant. He teams up for a duet with Bridges on “Fallin’ & Flyin’” and handles “Gone, Gone, Gone” just fine on his own. And don’t forget classics such as Buck Owens’ slide-guitar driven “Hello Trouble” the Louvin’ Brothers’ “My Baby’s Gone.” Be sure to check out the deluxe version of the disc, which has a total of 23 songs on it.
