Mindy Smith
Stupid Love

By Nicole Roberge

Mindy Smith opens her latest album with the folksy “What Went Wrong,” a simple reminder of her coffeehouse roots. “Highs and Lows” brings the tempo up a bit with vocals and music as Smith sings, “Highs and lows is how life goes/when little moments shine because they only get better with time.” “Love Lost” recalls summer love and getting over it. A loving song to lost love. “What Love Can Do” brings it up a notch, with a peppy sound and lyrics, as Smith sings, “This time I let you go, and it’s so deceiving, this love can do, it’s so deceiving, this love can do.”

“Couldn’t Stand the Rain” is a classic Smith song, distinguished by her raspy vocals and guitar-driven music. You believe her when she sings that she couldn’t stand the rain.  “Surface” is eloquent and elusive, Smith tangling her vocals around the music. “True Love of Mine” gives Smith that alt-country feel, with music and lyrics like, “There’s no such thing as too much of a good thing at dreaming at summertime.” The album closes with “Take a Holiday,” sunny and bright tune on which she sings, “How do you smile when all you feel is down?  It’s time for a change.” Smith is right about that, and her music takes the same path, her lyrics following an interesting journey but coming to the realization that all is right.
