An Horse
Rearrange Beds

Review By Emily Zemler

Australian duo An Horse, whose purposeful misuse of grammar should be ignored lest it deter one from listening, has every thing a good indie rock band should. The songs on its debut album are charming, toeing the line between moody emotion and a pop aesthetic, and perfectly sparse, combining jangly guitars, raw drums, and singer Kate Cooper’s genuine, likeable vocals. The duo, which also includes part-time drummer Damon Cox, has upped its popularity by touring with Tegan and Sara in the States and Death Cab For Cutie in Australia.

“Horizons,” a bouncy number that deftly employs tambourine sounds like a stripped down version of Metric, while “Little Little Little” is nuanced and full of subtle hooks and quotable lyrics like “Oh my God you’re a handful/And oh my God these hands are so small.” It’s inevitable An Horse will draw comparisons to Tegan and Sara. The comparisons are apt in the sense that both make amiable, charismatic songs that feel façade-free, but it’s clear the group can and will transcend association. Even if you don’t like An Horse’s name, you will surely be engaged by their music.
