Uh Huh Her
Common Reaction

Review By Emily Zemler

Los Angeles electropop duo Uh Huh Her (which takes its name from the PJ Harvey album) may be a fledgling act in the music scene, but the two ladies behind the music have enough indie cred for the band to demand at least some attention. Formed early last year, the group is composed of former Mellowdrone keyboardist and bassist Camila Grey and former Murmers/Gush guitarist and singer Leisha Hailey, who’s now much more well known as an actress on The L Word. The two musician’s formative groups are apparent on Uh Huh Her’s moody, lush debut, a collection of melodious, synth-driven songs that occasionally suffer from being mildly interchangeable. The quicker, more upbeat numbers, like the propulsive title track and catching first single “Not a Love Song,” are the disc’s standouts while introspective, hushed songs like “Everyone” and lackluster “Wait Another Day” become a bit tedious at times. The overall vision is engaging as Grey and Hailey craft an aching mood throughout the album, encouraging the listener to emotionally relate, most notably on the heavy-hearted closing track “Dreamer.” The record stands alone, for the most part, but it’s probably the pedigrees of the women who created it that will make it successful.
