Britney Spears

Britney Spears
Blackout

By John Reed

Since Britney Spears has had the tabloid year from hell, it’s good to report that for all the mistakes in her personal life, at least the people at her record company are on the ball. Blackout is Spears’ best album to date. Now, before you get too excited, just remember most of her previous CDs have been pretty dismal at best, so to outdo such fluff as Oops! ...I Did It Again or In The Zone isn’t really too heady of a task. Evidently, all one needs is a synthesized dance beat contraption and an echo machine (which gets Spears’ voice in tune) and you have a decent album.

“Gimme More” has been a downloadable monster since last September, and it’s the first and best cut from the CD. While it’s possibly Spears best dance song ever, it won’t garner any lyrical achievement awards. Lines like “Cameras are flashing while we're dirty dancing” would be the dopiest lyrics on the record if not for “I’m Mrs. Lifestyles of the rich and famous/I’m Mrs. Oh my God that Britney’s Shameless” from “Piece of Me.” Unfortunately, Blackout has its share of drivel as "Ooh Ooh Baby" and "Get Naked (I Got a Plan)" (not the best title for a track — and if you’ve followed some of her alleged behavior, you’ll understand why) hearkens back to the worst music Spears has created. For the first time in a long time, Britney is on track (musically). If only she’d lay off the heavy breathing and panting, which she’s been doing since 2001’s “I’m a Slave 4 You.”
