Tricky expands his musical horizons on "Mixed Race"
Back in the ’90s, Tricky single-handedly promulgated a style of dance music known as trip-hop. While the style didn’t entirely take hold, Tricky has deviated from a purist position and become so eclectic that you can’t possibly categorize his sound. He freely mixes dancehall grooves with jazzy riffs and techno sounds in creating a hybrid sound that’s all his own. And he continues to mine his rough and tumble childhood for lyrical inspiration.

Stream New Sufjan Stevens, Corin Tucker, Neil Young, Gucci Mane
The wait is (sort of) over. Asthmatic Kitty won't release The Age of Adz, Sufjan Stevens' first official album since 2005's masterstroke Illinois, until October 12. But right now, you can stream the entire album for free over on NPR. And The Age of Adz is only one of many hotly anticipated new albums streaming online below. We've got others, with links, below.

Jimmy Eat World Reunite with Original Producer on New Album 'Invented'
Emo pioneers Jimmy Eat World firmly stand behind the old adage: 'There's no place like home.' Over the years, and records, the quartet has discovered that when it comes to making albums, they'd much rather be working out of their own rehearsal space in Mesa, Ariz., than holed up in some ultra-flashy commercial studio.

Hear/Say Store Spotlight: Jimmy Eat World action, Clapton’s collaborations
After three years on the road supporting its last studio CD Chase This Light and a 10th anniversary outing supporting the now classic Clarity, Jimmy Eat World got back in the studio with producer Mark Trombino for Invented (Geffen). The seasoned knob twirler helped shape the sounds for early discs Static Prevails and Clarity, along with the group’s commercial standout Bleed American, making the current collection fall somewhere between the best of all worlds.

Is Glee Losing its Sparkle?
Go ahead and say it, you’re a Gleek. We all are whether we want to admit it or not. Almost every one of us factored into the 11 million viewers that tuned into its first season last year.
We watched intently as Rachel struggled with her feelings towards Finn and her desire to be a star. We cried with Curt when he came out to his father and then cheered Artie on when he wanted to learn how to dance. The characters and stories that Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan created are undeniably creative and extremely relatable.

Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark Go Back to the Future
"It seems quite logical and appropriate for lots of different reasons. In our own recent history we got back together to play some concerts so it seems logical to consider whether we wanted to get back to making some new music," says Andy McClusky, the curly-haired singer of Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, of the band's decision to reunite and create something new.

Weezer Announce First Blue/Pinkerton Dates
Weezer's Memories Tour may be named after their new single, but it's actually centered around their first two albums, which just about everyone agrees remain their best. As previously reported, the tour will stop for two nights in every city, playing their self-titled 1994 "Blue Album" in full the first night, and 1996's cult fave Pinkerton the second. (They'll also play some "greatest hits" on both nights, so if you thought you'd get out of a 2010 Weezer show without hearing "Beverly Hills", sorry.)

Beatles' 'Ed Sullivan Show' Appearances Revisited in New DVD
When the Beatles broke through in America in early 1964, 13-year-old New Jersey resident Debbie Gendler was way ahead of her fellow fans. She'd already had a copy of the group's British debut album, 'Please Please Me,' for months. It was a gift from friends of her parents, who brought it back from a trip to London.

Wild Flat = Carrie Brownstein, Janet Weiss, Mary Timony, Rebecca Cole
Back in March, Sleater-Kinney co-frontwoman Carrie Brownstein somewhat cryptically revealed that she and S-K/Quasi drummer Janet Weiss started a new quartet. “[W]e have seven songs,” she offered, “and there are four of us, and we’re based in Portland — but not all of our members live there.” Well, the secret’s out: Pitchfork reports that Brownstein and Weiss have teamed up with the Minders’ Rebecca Cole and former Helium singer-guitarist Mary Timony to form Wild Flag.

Jason Schwartzman Preps Third Coconut Records Album
Great news for fellow fans of Jason Schwartzman’s first two solo albums as Coconut Records, Nighttiming and Davy: Vulture reports that not only is the Scott Pilgrim/Rushmore star shaving off that unfortunate mustache (“It has eight more days. Exactly.”), but he’s also writing songs for his next record with Los Angeles producer/multi-instrumentalist Woody Jackson. The musical direction of LP3, however, is clearly still in the works:
Hopefully it’ll be good. But it might be kind of slow, musically. Maybe it’ll be really slow. Slower than usual. Painfully slow. But maybe not?Fast or slow, I can’t wait to hear more inevitably catchy jams from Schwartzman and friends. In the meantime, let’s enjoy two videos from the last album…

“Rock of Ages” serves up massive hair and hits with Constantine Maroulis from “American Idol” leading the Bic flick
When Constantine Maroulis was on season four of “American Idol,” he knocked his cover of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” so far out of the park that the band’s own Brian May asked the hopeful to contribute to a tribute project honoring the classic rock legends. It’s only fitting that the long-haired vocal powerhouse would someday find his way to Broadway, landing the lead role in the especially fitting “Rock of Ages,” a good-natured ‘80s spoof loaded with classic rock’s most famous (and occasionally infamous) hits.

Three Mile Pilot makes a welcomed return
The return of San Diego’s Three Mile Pilot, who release their new album, The Inevitable Past is the Future Forgotten, on Tuesday, Sept. 28, isn’t likely to be greeted as, say, the return of Soundgarden. But that’s not to say it’s not a noteworthy occasion. While you could argue that frontman Pall Jenkins has successfully channeled his artistic creativity into the moody Black Heart Procession, he almost sounds more comfortable fronting Three Mile Pilot, the indie band that he formed in the early ’90s prior to embarking down the Blackheart road. And you could maintain keyboardist Armistead Burwell Smith IV (aka Zack Smith) found a good home in Pinback. But he, too, really shines on this fantastic album. Together with drummer Tom Zinser, Jenkins and Smith simply sound magical on this, their first studio album in 13 years.

Spike Lee to Direct Roots/John Legend Live Stream
When the Roots and John Legend got together to record Wake Up!, their new album of classic soul covers, the thing that got them together was a cover of Arcade Fire's "Wake Up". That cover didn't make it onto the album, but the Roots and Legend will soon follow in Arcade Fire's footsteps once again.

Soundgarden Releasing 'Telephantasm' on Their Own Terms
To celebrate their reformation, Soundgarden are releasing 'Telephantasm,' a long overdue compilation of rarities and greatest hits. Before the single-disc version of the album hits stores, the album will be available in several expanded editions with different track listings, with the single-disc version being packaged with the 'Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock' game, due out Sept. 28 (the disc hits stores on Oct. 5). For Activision, the company that releases the 'Guitar Hero' series, being associated with the highly anticipated Soundgarden comeback was a no-brainer.

Weezer Confirm Blinkerton Tour, Play Leno, Auto-Tune the News
Hurley might be one of my least favorite Weezer albums, but Rivers Cuomo and the boys sure have a knack for holding our attention during the promo blitz: First, they teamed up with Ryan Adams for a new song, and now a tour featuring sets dedicated to Weezer’s best two albums, their self-titled debut (“Blue Album”) and Pinkerton, has been confirmed by the band’s label. Here’s the official statement from Epitaph:
This winter (November/December), Weezer will launch a multi-city U.S. tour, dubbed by fans as the “Blinkerton Tour.” The band will play two shows in each market-on the first night Weezer will play the Blue Album in its entirety, and the second night they will play Pinkerton in its entirety.0 Comments

Hear/Say Store Spotlight: Legend and The Roots come together, Santana’s guitar classics
On their own, John Legend and The Roots are both neo-soul heavyweights that also strike the perfect balance between current hip-hop and retro soul. Together on the same album, the two acts are literally unstoppable making Wake Up! (Columbia) one of the most anticipated urban albums of the year. Get ready for a series of 1960s and ‘70s cover songs strung together by socially conscious threads, including a rendition of Donny Hathaway’s “Little Getto Boy.”

Jennifer Egan's Rock 'n Roll Novel
I have no idea how the title applies to the story, but Jennifer Egan’s latest work, Welcome to the Goon Squad is a great “rock and roll” novel. While others contend that Don Delillo’s Great Jones Street is the best fictional account about rock and roll, I would counter that Egan’s work takes as many chances and provokes more thought than Delillo’s 1973’s work.

Paul McCartney to Reissue New Editions of 'Band on the Run'
Sir Paul McCartney will officially launch the new 'Paul McCartney Archive Collection' series on Nov. 2 with a reissue of his classic 'Band on the Run' album. To this day, 'Band on the Run' remains McCartney's most successful post-Beatles release, recorded with his post-Beatles band, Wings, in 1973. The new reissue will be available any which way you like -- a single-disc standard edition, a 3-disc special edition, a 4-disc deluxe edition or, finally, a 2-disc 180gm vinyl edition.

Radiohead Wrap Up New "Group of Songs"
According to a new essay by Radiohead bassist Colin Greenwood for UK organization Index on Censorship, the band "have just finished another group of songs, and have begun to wonder about how to release them in a digital landscape that has changed again." When we spoke with the group's drummer Phil Selway back in July, he said Radiohead were "slap dab in the middle of" making their new album. Now, they seem to be done. (A spokesperson for the band had no further comment on Greenwood's statement.)

"The Town" is a well-crafted thriller
Written and directed by Ben Affleck, The Town is a well-crafted film that has the look and feel of a flick helmed by an auteur such as Clint Eastwood. The film traces the life and crimes of four bank robbers – Doug MacRay (Affleck), Jem Coughlin (Jeremy Renner), Gloansy (Slaine) and Desmond Elden (Owen Burke). They’re a group of townies who hail from Charlestown, a tough section of Boston known for producing hardened criminals. The guys are pulling a heist when they take Claire (Rebecca Hall) hostage, blindfolding her so she can’t recognize them and leaving her on a coastal beach. They’re pretty certain she doesn’t know their identities but to make sure, Doug follows her around for a few days.

New documentary revisits two classic Rush albums
The latest “Classic Albums” DVD release from Eagle Vision revisits two seminal Rush albums, 1976’s 2112 and 1981’s Moving Pictures. Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson calls it the album that signified the moment at which “Rush started sounding like Rush.” Loosely based on Ayn Rand philosophies, the concept album certainly gave the band its cult following. Its sci-fi story had to be gleaned by listening to the album from start to finish. Much of the material in this documentary is covered in the recent Rush documentary, Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage. But this 112-minute doc, a combination of shows that originally aired on VH-1, still has plenty going for it.

Trent Reznor Releases Free Sampler for Social Network Soundtrack
While Trent Reznor made headlines during seemingly all of 2009 with his vow that Nine Inch Nails were closing shop, he's since been in the news almost as much with announcements and promises of new music (including, as it were, Nine Inch Nails material). Guess he subscribes to the "bad news, first" principle.

Of Montreal Trade Computers for Real Instruments on 'False Priest'
With computers having the ability to simulate every instrument under the sun, it's no surprise that artists would opt to stay at home and just do everything themselves. It's cheaper and you don't have to worry about crazy, stubborn producers. But for Of Montreal's Kevin Barnes, who started recording the band's new album, 'False Priest,' in that fashion, something didn't feel right. "I don't really have mad engineering skills," he admits to Spinner. "A curse, in a way, is that I record at home. I taught myself how to do everything but I don't really know what I'm doing."

Saint Etienne Reissue Two More Albums
Since last year, British cosmo-pop greats Saint Etienne (whose Bob Stanley has contributed to Pitchfork) have been reissuing all their old albums, and that whole campaign is nearly done. The band will release deluxe editions of the final two albums in this plan, 1998's Good Humor and 2005's Tales From Turnpike House, October 25 via Heavenly/Universal. Both albums will come in 2xCD sets, with the original album on one disc and another platter full of B-sides and unreleased material, as well as a ton of liner notes. We've got tracklists for both below.

Pink Floyd’s classic rock opera “The Wall” comes to life on Roger Waters’ fall tour
The chances of pigs flying for a whole tour (or Pink Floyd officially reuniting) may be slim to none, but that doesn’t mean co-founder/primary songwriter Roger Waters can’t bring the band’s iconic past back to life. Though he’s frequently performed the progressive rockers’ epic material during solo shows, his last tour featured an entire rendering of Dark Side of the Moon. As a result of that increased gravitation towards the group’s catalogue, it’s no surprise to see him reconstructing The Wall in its entirety, especially considering this year marks the 30th anniversary of the groundbreaking collection.

Underworld Look to Youth for 'Barking'
To endure a long career these days, bands are certainly faced with an uphill battle. If you're an electronica musician, the battle is steeper, even though the genre has gained more mainstream appreciation over the last 10 years. That's why it's rather remarkable that British electro pioneers Underworld, whose eighth studio album 'Barking' is out now, have stayed together and fresh for 30 years.

Chromeo Keeps 'Casual' for Major Label Debut
Chromeo continues its journey into the creamy center of retro-'80s electro-funk on "Business Casual," the Montreal duo's third full-length and the follow-up to 2007's "Fancy Footwork," which earned Chromeo slots at Coachella and Bonnaroo and has sold 58,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Out today on Atlantic, "Business Casual" finds singer/guitarist David Macklovitch, also known as Dave 1, sharing his thoughts on hot messes and knights in shining armor over typically crafty arrangements by synthmeister Patrick "P-Thugg" Gemayel.

The Dismemberment Plan Reunite
Back in the late 90s and early 00s, the twitchy Washington, DC post-punkers the Dismemberment Plan were one of the most deliriously awesome live bands on the planet, with every show turning into a massively cathartic dance party. The D-Plan broke up in 2003, and other than a pair of 2007 benefit reunion shows, they haven't done anything since then. But come January, the band will reunite for a quick East Coast tour, as The Washington Post reports. At least a few of us will get to experience that delirium again. Dates below.

Tim and Eric Plan US Tour
Comedy absurdists Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim, the pair behind the cultishly beloved Adult Swim program "Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!", take their act on the road this year on their "Chrimbus Spectacular 2010" tour. The Tim and Eric variety show includes musical parodies and videos-- including clips from their "Chrimbus Special", which premieres on the Cartoon Network December 5. Fellow comedy weirdo Neil Hamburger will open, and the band Pusswhip Banggang will play special performances. Dates below.

Hear/Say Store Spotlight: Robert Plant returns, James’ new double disc
After an unbelievably successful tag team with Alison Krauss, Robert Plant returns to the solo ranks but retains the pair’s stripped down motif. Band of Joy (Rounder) marks the official follow-up to 2005’s excellent individual offering Mighty ReArranger, though its roots actually dive back much deeper. The album’s moniker (which also happens to be the revitalized name of his current backing band) tips its hat towards Plant’s pre-Led Zeppelin act that also included the late great John Bonham.

"Resident Evil: Afterlife" is run-of-the-mill science fiction
The fourth film in the Resident Evil series, Resident Evil: Afterlife has one thing going for it: Milla Jovovich. As the main character, Alice, Jovovich is one badass babe. She’s got mad martial arts skills; not only can she kick like a black belt, but she also wields a mean machine gun. While Jovovich’s perfect cheekbones and stencil-thin eyebrows hardly fit the look of a woman who’s been battling zombies in post-apocalypytic Tokyo, that’s no reason to write her off as an action hero. Still, the movie is no award winner. Its flimsy plot (we are talking about a series based on a video game) centers upon Alice and her ongoing battle with Umbrella Corporation chairman Albert Wesker (Shawn Roberts), her nemesis and archrival.

Iron & Wine Announce New Album
It's been a long time since Iron & Wine left us with an album of pillowy folk-rock to step to. Sam Beam and friends haven't released a studio album since The Shepherd's Dog in 2007, but they're finally coming back with a new one. Iron & Wine's new one arrives early in 2011, and it's called Kiss Each Other Clean.

Ben Folds Needs Bob Saget to Help Find a Foul Mouthed Old Lady
With the release of Ben Folds new album, 'Lonely Avenue,' right around the corner you'd expect him to be squarely focused on the task of promoting his collaborative project with 'High Fidelity' author Nick Hornby. And he is -- at least when he's not on the hunt for an actress to star in his next YouTube video.

Pantera Singer Looks Back for 'Cowboys from Hell' Reissue
Phil Anselmo is hoping that the upcoming 20th anniversary reissue of Pantera's landmark "Cowboys From Hell" will be the start of a trend for the metal group's catalog -- or at least yield a similar deluxe treatment for its follow-up, 1992's "Vulgar Display of Power."

Jeff Tweedy: The Strange Birth of Wilco's 'Yankee Hotel Foxtrot'
Two definitions of irony: Wilco's biggest-sellling album, 2002's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, was the record that got them a pink slip the year before from their original label, Reprise. Nonesuch, the company that next signed the band and released the record, was a subsidiary of the same corporation — which meant the parent, Warner Bros. Records, paid for the album twice.

King of Pop earns star-studded birthday celebration filled with revealing reflections at MJ Fanvention
On August 29, Michael Jackson would’ve turned 52, though after his untimely passing last summer on the verge of his This Is It comeback concert stretch, all fans have left to celebrate is a treasure trove of memories. The fittingly titled MJ Fanvention showcased several mementos and memorabilia, but more than merely checking out photos, artwork, costumes and loads of look-a-likes throughout the Radisson Hotel at Star Plaza (just a few miles from his hometown of Gary, Indiana) were those who shared firsthand stories about the King of Pop.

Interpol Discuss New Album, Backlash, and Why They're 'Glad' Carlos D Is Gone
It's been 13 years since Interpol formed in New York City and eight since the band's debut, 'Turn on the Bright Lights,' dragged post-punk from the shadows back into the (in their case, red) spotlight. So what if they haven't turned out to be the second coming of Joy Division or the next U2 (although they are opening for them) -- there's nothing wrong with being this generation's Depeche Mode, outlasting the trendy scene they helped spawn, and looking damn good doing it.

Apples In Stereo Frontman Invents Mind Controlled Theremin
If anyone was going to invent a Theremin that you could control with your mind, it'd have to be someone from the Elephant 6 collective, right? According to a possibly-not-joking press release, Apples in Stereo frontman Robert Schneider has done just that. Scheider has invented a device he calls the Teletron, which allows the user to play an analog synth completely through brain activity.

Hear/Say Store Spotlight: Anberlin’s attack, Interpol reemerges
Blurring the lines between hard rock, power pop and emo, Anberlin's audience spans listeners who grew up in the 1980s through today. Instead of showcasing an affinity for The Smiths or Depeche Mode (as in the past), this brand new disc Dark Is the Way: Light Is a Place (Republic) is a straight-up rocker that ranks amongst its most urgent to date, thanks to production from Brendan O'Brien (Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam, Rage Against the Machine).

Vinyl Throwdown #13: The Black Keys 12" "Tighten Up"/"Howling For You"
Relevence: Brothers has been a strong vinyl seller for Edge Distribution, Cleveland, holding steady in their top ten for the last two months. It makes sense, as vinyl is the perfect format for The Black Keys' blissful blend of punk swagger, sonic backwater blues, and 60s soul. Even surface noise (the snaps and pops on dusty records) adds to the throwback ambience of this group.

Progressive rockers Rush earn first ever documentary, loaded with interviews and rare footage
The stories have been told countless times behind legendary bands like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and AC/DC, and while Rush isn’t quite in that upper echelon of influence, its impact is rampantly apparent throughout the classic and alternative rock annals. Surprisingly up until now, there’s never been a definitive documentary telling the story of Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson and Neil Peart (along with the team that helped elevate them to international prominence), and despite less drama than many of the above bands, Beyond the Lighted Stage (Banger Films/Zoe Vision) is endlessly interesting from start to finish.

Radiohead and Fans Team Up for Free Live Film
Just as a studious group of Nine Inch Nails fans (“This One Is On Us”) did with the last show on NIN’s “Lights In The Sky” tour, a team of over 4 dozen Radiohead fans have carefully edited a slew of live footage from the band’s set in Prague last August to produce a free, multi-format concert film, dubbed Radiohead: Live in Praha. Though a pro-edited, fan-shot live show is certainly noteworthy on its own, the best part was revealed modestly below the setlist on their official download site: “Audio masters kindly provided by the band.” (!)

Hear T.I.'s Eight Minute Rick Ross Collab
T.I. recently gave a scene-stealing guest verse to fellow Southern rap monarch Rick Ross' big-money posse cut "Maybach Music III", and now Ross has returned the favor. The new T.I./Ross collab, possibly intended for T.I.'s forthcoming King Uncaged, is nearly eight minutes of brutally regal tough talk, and it bears the unfortunate title "Pledge Allegiance to the Swag". The gigantic-sounding beat comes courtesy of J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League. Download the track over at Nah Right.

"I needed to get a bunch of pop music out of my system," he tells Rolling Stone, contrasting Maximum Balloon against TV on the Radio. "We don¹t have any nine-minute epic songs about global warming."
