  • Dancer flick “B-Girl” fails to live up to its promise

B-Girl (Screen Media Films) is a movie that really had so much promise, but failed to deliver on every angle. Featuring a cast of stellar dancers, this dance movie originally offered an original story to potentially bring something very new and nice to the quickly tiring genre of dance movies. Featuring ‘Lady’ Jules Urich (America’s Best Dance Crews, You Got Served) and an all-star cast of movie and television dance stars who have also toured with performers such as Janet Jackson, Madonna and Fergie, there was an expectation of some greatness to follow.

  • A sneak look at Cirque du Soleil's Viva Elvis

Caught a preview of the new Cirque du Soleil Viva Elvis show that’s set to officially open at the new Aria Hotel and Casino on Feb. 19. The show is still getting retooled so I can’t really offer up a formal review but I can tell you a bit about the production, which is a bit more like a musical than the Cirque du Soleil Beatles Love show that has played for two years now at the Mirage (and is well worth checking out, even if you’re not a huge Beatles fan). Rather, Viva Elvis is an attempt to chronicle the King’s life. A narrator acts as Elvis’ manager, Colonel Tom Parker, leading us through Elvis’ humble childhood and his rise to stardom, particularly in Vegas where he had a seven-year run of sold out shows.

  • Edge of Darkness is a middle-of-the-road thriller

I haven’t seen the British mini-series on which Edge of Darkness is based, but I have to think it’s better than this half-baked movie. The film remake stars Mel Gibson as Detective Thomas Craven, a Boston cop whose daughter Emma (Bojana Novakovic) is gunned down as she walks out his front door one evening with him. At first, the investigation centers on him because, as a cop, it’s assumed he has plenty of enemies. But Tom soon realizes his daughter was the target and he begins an investigation that leads him to Northmoor International Nuclear Facility, the place she worked.

  • Golden great lends a soulful hand for Haiti relief

While the bulk of last weekend’s Haiti relief efforts were directed towards a telethon featuring a who’s who of megastars representing every genre, the Chicago area was given a more personal way to get involved. The historically restored Arcada Theatre added to the growing list of star power with Dionne Warwick dedicating her set to the downtrodden and channeling all proceeds towards UNICEF (The United Nations Children’s Fund) for Haiti.

  • Great performances can't redeem The Book of Eli

While The Book of Eli has done reasonably well at the box office (especially when you consider it’s competing with the behemoth that is Avatar), the movie doesn’t have much going for it. Gary Oldman and Denzel Washington give great performances, but it's all wasted on an inconsequential story. Eli (Washington), the film’s central character, is one of the few to survive a cataclysmic event that has destroyed most of the world. He stops in a small town to find water and has a run-in with Carnegie (Oldman), a thug who has his henchmen going on raids to try to find a bible, which he thinks will give his rule some legitimacy.

  • Music Industry Reacts to U.S. Approval of Live Nation - Ticketmaster Merger

Live Nation and Ticketmaster, the two biggest players in the $4.4 billion worldwide concert business, received U.S. Department of Justice approval Monday for a merger that is likely to affect every live-music fan, artist, agent, manager and promoter. In a statement, Ticketmaster’s chief executive, Eagles manager Irving Azoff, called the decision “a great win for fans,” but some in the business fear the companies’ combined power will make it difficult for outsiders to promote shows and sell tickets. “It’s disappointing to me. It’s just another step in eliminating competition,” says Buck Williams, a Nashville agent who represents R.E.M. and Widespread Panic. “They’ve pulled the rug out from under the entrepreneurs, to some degree.”

  • Record Store Spotlight: Catch Corinne and Patty at Century 21 in Murfreesboro

British singer/songwriter Corinne Bailey Rae is one of today's most accomplished but underrated neo-soul sirens. Throughout The Sea (Capitol), she once again exposes her soul throughout a multitude of emotions, including loss, hope and everything in between. Though not as popular as Alicia Keys or India.Arie, expect Rae to give both of those stars a run for their money in the immediate future.

  • Charlotte Gainsbourg teams up with Beck

Daughter of the great French singer Serge Gainsbourg, Charlotte Gainsbourg is slowly but surely making a name for herself as a musician. She’s already an established actress and if you saw her edgy performance last year in Lars Von Trier’s gruesome Anti-Christ, you know she can be quite daring. With some help from Beck, who co-wrote the songs on her new album, I.R.M., she has her best album to date.

  • Lilith Tour Adds Norah Jones, Cat Power, The Gossip to Lineup

Photo: Bonaventure/AFP/Getty Norah Jones, Cat Power, Loretta Lynn, Heart and the Gossip are some of the newest additions to this year’s resurrected Lilith Fair touring festival, which as Rolling Stone previously reported will also feature Sheryl Crow, Mary J. Blige, Ke$ha, Tegan & Sara, Erykah Badu and many more. The Lilith lineup, the first in 10 years, reads like a Who’s Who of female artists already, but organizers promise even more stars will be enlisted for the fest in the coming weeks.

  • “The Accidental Husband” pairs predictable moments with plenty of fun

As far as romantic comedies go, The Accidental Husband falls a bit flat, though a strong cast and original plot are still sure to entertain. The film begins when a caller into an New York talk show is convinced to break things off with her fiancé, a local fire fighter named Patrick (Jeffrey Dean Morgan of P.S. I Love You), who decides to get revenge by hacking into the county marriage records and “marry them."

  • Motion City Soundtrack finally makes its major label debut

After being together as a band for a decade now, Motion City Soundtrack has more than earned its due. So when it came time to sign with a major label, the guys didn't worry that their sound would change. And it hasn't. Their major label debut, My Dinosaur Life, features the same kind of infectious pop-punk melodies you find on the rest of their catalogue. Bassist Matt Taylor recently phoned in from his West Virginia home to discuss the album.

So what has the major label experience been like so far?

It’s been amazing so far. You’re concerned as you make that jump, but we have been doing this for awhile. We signed with xx first and did three records with them. We learned a lot from that and we armed ourselves and knew what to do. The label knew that, too. They knew they’re not dealing with kids who put a song on the website and got big overnight. It’s a mutual respect thing.

  • Eels new album is another introspective affair

Eels frontman Mark Oliver Everett has described End Times as a “divorce album” but while it might have lost love at its core, it’s not without its upbeat moments. First, you have to get past the dreary opening track, “The Beginning.” On it, Everett almost sounds like Springsteen as he mumbles, “Everything was beautiful and free in the beginning.” Things quickly pick up on the snappy subsequent tune, “Gone Man,” a tune that thrives on its psychedelic guitar riff and raspy vocals.

  • Crazy Heart soundtrack is an expansive country collection

Crazy Heart star Jeff Bridges recently won a well-deserved Golden Globe for his portrayal of a country music singer who’s down on his luck after an illustrious career. Bridges is really great in the role but perhaps the most remarkable thing is that the guy can actually sing. With the help of a vocal coach, he was able to handle the live performances in the film and didn’t have to have his singing parts dubbed. As a result, the film’s soundtrack, which T Bone Burnett (the guy who put the O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack together) produced, stands as yet more evidence to his talent. Bridges nails numbers such as the sparse ballad “Hold On You” and “Somebody Else.” Co-star Colin Farrell also hired a vocal coach to get him through the film.

  • “Mamma Mia!” earns fresh take thanks to ABBA’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nod

If there’s any musical guilty of touring way too often, it’s “Mamma Mia!,” the fictional romantic comedy based around the pop jukebox of ABBA. However, in the wake of that act’s recently announced Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, it’s struck up the fan frenzy all over again, causing theatre and concert goers alike to flock in droves to the show.

  • Spoon's Transference Loses Nothing

We aren't even done with January and so far Merge Records has given us possibly the song of the year (The Shout Out Loud's "Fall Hard") and the CD of the year.

"Before Destruction," the first track on Spoon's great new CD, Transference, is deceptive.   I was anticipating the sprite, cynnically uptempo attitude of the band's 2007 offering, Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga; with its industrial buzzes and the dank basement aura, "Before Destruction" threw me off.   Would the whole LP be such a downer?

  • Record Store Spotlight: Grab the best of the 2010 GRAMMY Awards at Sami’s Music in Lexington

The 52nd installment of the GRAMMY Awards is right around the corner (Sunday, January 31 to be exact), which means the timing couldn’t be more appropriate for a compilation of top nominees. As expected, 2010 GRAMMY Nominees (Capitol) has all the usual suspects, though there are plenty of killer singles on the CD including U2’s “I’ll Go Crazy If I Don’t Go Crazy Tonight,” Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody” and Black Eyed Peas’ “I Gotta Feeling.” Other artists include Coldplay, Dave Matthews Band, The Fray and Katy Perry.

  • Good acting redeems the formulaic Leap Year

Leap Year has a very familiar storyline. Its opposites attract theme isn’t anything we haven’t already seen. And yet Matthew Goode and Amy Adams are so good together, their chemistry outweighs the film’s limitations. Adams plays Anna, a high-strung city girl who anticipates her boyfriend Jeremy (Adam Scott) is about to pop the question. When that doesn’t happen, she decides to meet up with him in Dublin, where he’s gone to attend a conference and propose to him, an Irish tradition of sorts in which women can propose to men on Feb. 29.

  • Kraftwerk earns remastered treatment on career spanning box set

Long before Depeche Mode, New Order and Pet Shop Boys, let alone Fischerspooner, La Roux and Alphabeat, Germany’s Kraftwerk were introducing innovative sounds to the electronic community. In actually, the computer-centered troupe was inventing the genre from the ground up, experimenting with a variety of studio techniques and programmed-pulsations that laid the foundation for most like-minded acts to come.

  • Lovely Bones film isn't likely to please fans of the book

Whether or not you have read Alice Sebold’s The Lovely Bones, chances are you won’t be crazy about Peter Jackson’s adaptation of the book. The film starts strong as we get to know 14-year-old Susie Salmon (Saoirse Ronan), an ambitious young girl who has aspirations of becoming a professional photographer. She has loving parents, Jack (Mark Wahlberg) and Abigail (Rachel Weisz) and lives in a seemingly safe neighborhood. One afternoon, however, while walking home from school, she’s accosted by her neighbor (Stanley Tucci), who lures into an underground chamber and kills her.

  • Lil Wayne's Rebirth Still Set for February 2nd Release

Despite rumors that Lil Wayne’s oft-delayed (and ultimately leaked) Rebirth was postponed yet again to June 2010, a fresh press release from Universal Music reiterates that Weezy’s rap-rock disc will finally be released on February 2nd. The news of Rebirth’s impending arrival comes just one week after the debut of the music video for Wayne’s Scarface-sampling “On Fire,” and quells any concern of another Rebirth postponement after the LP’s preorder pages were removed from virtually all major e-tailers.

  • Final Johnny Cash American Recordings Album Due

In the early 90s, Johnny Cash signed to Rick Rubin's American label and began releasing the American Recordings series of albums. Produced by Rubin, the American Recordings were stark, stripped-down, mostly acoustic meditations on the more apocalyptic side of his persona. Cash covered Beck, Nick Cave, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Soundgarden, Danzig, and, of course, Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt". And he cemented his reputation as one of the reigning badasses in American music history-- not that that rep really needed much help.

  • "The Monster Ball” secures Lady Gaga’s slot as a mega superstar in the making

The parallels between Lady Gaga and Madonna are literally endless, though the relative newcomer has one leg up on good old Madge at the moment. Whereas her “Material Girl” hero ruled the world throughout the 1980s and ‘90s, the 23-year-old modern pop starlet is red hot right here and now, so much so that she’s sold out three months worth of tour dates, including a trio in Chicago that required an upgrade to a venue with higher capacity.

  • My Morning Jacket's Eclectic Covers: From Danzig to Dylan

Photo: Schwartz/Getty My Morning Jacket may not have logged as many miles on the road as Phish — yet — but given another few decades of touring, Jim James and crew might give the Vermont quartet a run for “most cover songs played live.” The Kentucky rockers have covered everyone from the Band to Poison to Blue Oyster Cult, and now the blog You Ain’t No Picasso has wrangled more than 50 of the band’s live covers for your listening pleasure. (And we’re not even counting Yim Yames’ EP of George Harrison covers Tribute To.)

Photo: Getty Images Director Robert Zemeckis’ 3-D update of the Beatles’ animated Yellow Submarine has found its crew of actors to voice the Fab Four, with The Princess Bride star Cary Elwes leading the cast as the voice behind George Harrison. • Same old Cera in Youth in Revolt

Will Michael Cera ever grow up? Famous for playing characters suffering from arrested development, the diminutive actor has essentially offered us variations on the same character ever since emerging as the hapless teenager George for three seasons on the short-lived TV series Arrested Development. Though he is now 21 years old, in Youth in Revolt, Cera plays Nick Twisp, a 16-year-old who has little to no luck with women and is way too smart for his own good.

  • Record Store Spotlight: Try Vampire Weekend or OK Go at The Groove in Nashville

Hype may have carried Vampire Weekend through its first album, but now the indie rockers will have to rely on actual talent rather than strictly buzz. Contra (XL Recordings) is the band’s sophomore record, which may be prone to a slump, but one said to interject a plethora of new rhythms, arrangements and extermination into its highly heralded (though overly praised) Afro-pop basis.

    [caption id="attachment_4136" align="alignleft" width="120" caption="computer expert C. Matthew Curtin"]computer expert C. Matthew Curtin[/caption]

Are you using peer to peer software to download free music and movies?  Imagine this:

It’s the early morning and you are fast asleep, after a long night of surfing the web.  You are awakened by a shout, and you hear your father get out of bed and go to the front door.  An unfamiliar voice speaks to your father, and then grunts loudly.  A stampede of heavy boots shake the house, and the sound approaches your door.   There is a loud rap: “Police! Come on out!”  You jump up, grab your clothes and head out into the hall, getting out of the way of the several heavily-padded, heavily armed SWAT officers going into your room.  Another officer asks you to come with him, and you go down stairs.  As you sit there with your parents, the procession of officers take your family’s various electronic information devices, including your computer, out to their vehicles.

  • M.I.A. Grabs Unusual Singers for Summer Disc

When Rolling Stone’s Brian Hiatt chatted with global party-starter M.I.A. for our decade-end issue (read his Q&A here), the 34-year-old singer revealed that after five months of work, she was putting finishing touches on her follow-up to Kala, due this summer. She did much of the recording with producer Blaqstarr, who she says “simply makes music that sounds good, and I needed that. I definitely needed to come to music on this album, to make music. I don’t want it to be gimmicky or silly or hipstery.”

  • Joy Division/New Order mastermind Bernard Sumner starts all over again with Bad Lieutenant

The name Bernard Sumner is synonymous with some of alternative music’s most seminal acts, from his time in goth group extraordinaire Joy Division through dance pioneers New Order. Add in some work alongside The Smiths’ Johnny Marr in Electronic, plus a plethora of side projects and remix endeavors and the creativity seems literally endless for this elder statesmen of alternative music. Though he could easily retire or rest on his laurels, Sumner is starting all over again with a brand new band called Bad Lieutenant, which may be his current priority, but hasn’t distanced him entirely from that lauded past.

  • The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus is a long, strange trip

The biggest problem with The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus, the latest film from madcap director Terry Gilliam (Brazil) isn’t the fact that the late Heath Ledger wasn’t alive long enough to finish the flick. Ledger plays a mysterious man named Tony whom Doctor Parnuss (Christopher Plummer) rescues, cutting him down from a noose where he was left to die. Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell all fill in for Ledger, who appears in about half of the two-hour film. With their goatees and respective good looks, the subs are every bit as charming as Ledger and don’t disrupt the film’s flow. The real problem with The Imaginarium is that its plot is so damned convoluted.

Very few female pop stars have made such a major splash in such a short amount of time as Lady Gaga. With basically a year on the books, she’s spring boarded her way towards every angle of pop culture, dominating radio, music videos, prime time and late night television, the internet, and last but not least, dance clubs of all orientations. Not only are her club-infused groove ingeniously infectious, but the singer/songwriter is always wearing outrageous outfits and overflowing with attitude to get some extra attention.

Of Montreal’s Kevin Barnes has revealed a few of the special guests he’s recruiting for the band’s upcoming follow-up to Skeletal Lamping aren’t exactly the usual suspects. The singer tells Stereogum that the disc, tentatively titled False Priest or The Controller Sphere (and due in August/September 2010) will move away from the psychedelic-glam sound of the group’s recent releases in favor of an aesthetic more in line with 1970s soul-funk stars like Parliament, Curtis Mayfield and Stevie Wonder. (Grab a listen to a possible track from the album on Stereogum.)

  • Record Store Spotlight: Catch Kanye and Elvis at Cosmic Debris in Anniston, AL

He may have earned an even more negative reputation for the ultimate diss of 2009 against Taylor Swift, but Kanye West seemed sincere when offering apologies and has even taken time off the road to reflect. No matter one’s personal opinion of the rapper, there’s no denying his talent on this CD/DVD set of VH1 Storytellers (Def Jam/Roc A Fella). • 3 Members of Decemberists Form Black Prairie

Three members of the Decemberists (Chris Funk, Jenny Conlee, and Nate Query), along with two others (Analisa Tornfelt and John Neufeld) have formed the experimental bluegrass band Black Prairie. The Decemberists and Quasi kicked the series off, with Blitzen Trapper, Explode Into Colors, and the Builders and the Butchers set to perform in the coming months.

  • Queen scores luxurious treatment in new illustrated history book

If any rock n’ roll band deserves a coffee table book fit for royalty, it’s Queen in all its Freddie Mercury-led grandeur. And across nearly 300 pages and more than 400 rare and newly unearthed photos, Queen: The Ultimate Illustrated History of the Crown Kings of Rock (Voyageur Press) not only lives up to its title, but provides an exhaustive overview of the group’s legendary lineage. Author Phil Sutcliffe interviewed the band back in the day, but also provides updated assessments of the group’s pop culture conquest, which range from Wayne’s World to just about every sports stadium’s overhead system (plus video games, plenty more soundtracks and covers galore).

  • My apologies to Kevin Renick

Last week I blogged about how the music in Up in the Air worked so well with the movie.  Going over the soundtrack listing without actually listening to the soundtrack, I erroneously attributed the wonderful closing song, “Up in the Air,” to Graham Nash.
