  • Gone But Not Forgotten: The Decade in Deaths

The 2000s gave birth to new technologies and musical innovations -- but they also brought the deaths of some of our brightest and most influential stars. As you look forward to the next decade, look back at some of the great voices that were silenced over the last 10 years.

  • Bruce Springsteen Honored at Kennedy Center by Mellencamp, Vedder, Sting

Earlier this month, Eddie Vedder, Melissa Etheridge, John Mellencamp, Ben Harper and Sting brought the songs of Bruce Springsteen to an unlikely venue: Washington, DC’s opulent Kennedy Center. The full Kennedy Center Honors aired on CBS last night, giving fans the opportunity to see the New Jersey legend sitting beside President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama as a cavalcade of artists professed their admiration for his life and music. Caroline Kennedy described Springsteen as “a rocker from the Jersey shore who created his own musical universe and across America and the world became ‘The Boss,’ ” at the top of the show. (Read our on-the-scene report from the Kennedy Center Honors, which also paid tribute to Robert DeNiro, Dave Brubeck, Mel Brooks and Grace Bumbry.)

  • In ultra fine form, The Zombies revisit a classic

Though the British Invasion boasted a plethora of bands that literally exploded overnight and disappeared the next day, a handful actually endured with incredible influence and longevity. Of course there were The Beatles, but others from that same era like The Kinks, The Animals and The Zombies were also major players in shaping the sounds of the 1960s, in turn, rubbing off on the Brit-pop movement from the ‘90s through today. In fact, that latter act is still alive and thriving as documented on its new DVD The Zombies: Odessey & Oracle (Revisited): The 40th Anniversary Concert (MVD Visual).

  • Creed chronicles comeback in first ever concert DVD

Even after ten years together sold during its initial incarnation and over 35 million albums sold, Creed never released a concert DVD until its reunion tour in 2009. Creed Live follows the foursome getting back together with all previous tensions transferred into a pummeling hard rock road show. Filmed in Houston in front of over 18,000 attendees, the disc defies convention with an astounding high definition shoot directed by the venerable Daniel E. Catullo III (Rush, Smashing Pumpkins, Nickelback).

In 2000, original Beach Boys Mike Love and Al Jardine squabbled in a California court over rights to the group's name. Seems Love was unhappy that Jardine was touring under "Beach Boys Family and Friends." Brother Records (owned in part by Love) jumped into the fray, suing Jardine for trademark infringement. Jardine countersued for $5 mil.

Two songs into a February 2000 show at New York's Roseland, Fiona Apple began a profanity-laced rant about the venue's sound system. A song and a half later, after addressing all the critics in the crowd ("Fuck you! Put your notebooks away!") and her backing band ("This song is dead! Just stop it! This is a nightmare!") Apple left the stage in tears.

  • “The Addams Family” makes musically memorable pre-Broadway debut

Inspired by comic strip turned television show and movie of the same name, “The Addams Family” musical follows the delightfully dark troupe of housemates through its latest adventure of confusion, chaos and comedy. Led by an all-star cast of Nathan Lane (Gomez) and Bebe Neuwirth (Morticia), the updated tale begins with an introduction of each slightly deranged but instantly likeable character and the New York castle in which they dwell, complete with a pet squid and a basement chamber full of oddities.

  • Up in the Air's soundtrack right on schedule

There are so many good things about Up in the Air, the latest Jason Reitman movie starring George Clooney, and most of them have discussed elsewhere  (see Jeff Niesel's review).  One aspect of the movie not be overlooked, though, is the music.  Like in his previous movie, Juno, Reitman makes optimal use of his soundtrack.

  • Raconteurs live album is worth seeking out

Recorded last year, the Raconteurs’ Live in London has just come out on vinyl as part of an exclusive release to Third Man Records fan club members who enrolled at the label's website. After an atmospheric intro, it commences with “Consoler of the Lonely,” which sounds a bit rawer than its studio version. The same goes for the subsequent “The Switch and the Spur,” which concludes with an epic, classic rock-like jam. After a bit of banter, the guys turn down the volume a bit with the piano-driven “You Don’t Understand Me,” a tune that finds singer-guitarists Jack White and Brendan Benson exchanging verses until the tune segues nicely into “Top Yourself.” “Hold Up” also benefits from its live rendition and is followed by the bluesy Charley Jordon cover “Keep it Clean,” a tune that really allows White to show off his guitar chops.

  • “Dear Jack” an interesting and emotional account of Jack Mannequin’s singer in sickness

Andrew McMahon is the singer of broken up (and recently reunited) pop/punk group Something Corporate and alternative pop group Jack's Mannequin. Something Corporate hit it big in the underground scene in the early 2000s, releasing two full-length LPs and two EPs on its label Drive-Thru Records. In 2004, McMahon announced his new side project Jack's Mannequin. However, during the recording, mixing and producing of the project, McMahon was diagnosed with leukemia. This is where the documentary Dear Jack picks up.

  • George Clooney shines in Up in the Air

George Timothy Clooney has had quite a year. First, the guy starred as a contractor with a shady past in the Catch-22-like The Men Who Stare at Goats, a hilarious satire of experimental military projects. Then, he lent his vocal talents to Wes Anderson’s stop-motion animation film, Fantastic Mr. Fox, a kids’ movie with plenty of appeal for adults. Now, he’s starring opposite Vera Farmiga in Juno director Jason Reitman’s new movie Up in the Air.

  • Record Store Spotlight: Pick up Mary J, Mudvayne at Sound Revolution in Houston

Looking more like the dignified Anita Baker on the cover than the “queen of hip-hop soul” (a title she’s maintained across nine studio CDs), Mary J Blige is all grown up these days. As the title Stronger With Each Tear (Geffen) suggests, the soulful singer is fully embracing her “No More Drama” adage and comfortably settling into a continuously healing skin. As for the disc’s musical make-up, expect appearances from Ne-Yo, T.I., Rodney Jenkins, Drake and Tricky Stewart, along with the moving track “Color” taken from the powerful new movie Precious.

  • Pylon singer discusses Chomp reissue

While art rockers Pylon never really became a household name, the band did have an influence on the post-punk movement, inspiring groups like R.E.M., which infamously covered its tune “Crazy.” Now, the band has just reissued its sophomore effort, 1982’s Chomp, a terrific album that lurches with all the madcap energy of early Gang of Four. Speaking one afternoon after she “vacuumed the house, emptied the dishwasher and read the paper,” Pylon singer Vanessa Hay talked about the reissue as she prepared to take her daughter to downtown Athens to see the Christmas parade. “Athens has really grown,” she says. “A lot of people who went out of state to college have been staying in state and the town’s bigger, and there’s more to do downtown than when I was in school.”

  • “In the Heights” emotionally unveils collegiate coming of age amidst an evolving New York neighborhood

When “In the Heights” burst onto Broadway in 2008, it scored an impressive 13 Tony Award nominations and took home the trophy for “Best Musical,” plus a Grammy Award for “Best Musical Show Album.” Given the strong response from the public and the music/theatre industries alike, the show hit the road with a current stop at Chicago’s Cadillac Palace Theatre, remaining a steady touring attraction thanks to a variety-filled soundtrack and coming of age story. The tale kicks off in New York City’s Washington Heights, a Dominican-American neighborhood that has a touch of graffiti, but a generally communal feel thanks to an inviting deli where a colorful cast of characters often find relief from a day’s trials.

  • Avatar's graphics are out of this world

Avatar’s storyline has plenty of issues. The theme of the brutal colonization of an indigenous people is nothing new, and the love story at its core is pretty damn hokey. But James Cameron’s film sure does look sharp. Set in the year 2154, the story revolves around Jake Sully (Terminator Salvation’s Sam Worthington), a U.S. Marine who has been paralyzed from the waist down. The guy is sent off to take his dead twin brother’s place and inhabit an avatar built in the likeness of the Na’vi, the blue-skinned people who inhabit a planet called Pandora.

  • Devendra Banhart Plans New Band with Strokes Drummer Fab Moretti

They aren't making a cologne together, unfortunately When I interviewed Devendra Banhart in September, he talked about his plans to lead an "all-harmonium orchestra called Droney Mitchell" and wanting to "do a record with Adam Green of all German schlager songs." He seems like a guy who is always thinking of ridiculous band names and concepts to talk about in interviews and, as an interviewer, I appreciate that. Of course, whether any of these dream bands actually happen in real life is a mystery.

Beastie Boys’ Adam Yauch says that he’s “doing all right” after his battle with salivary gland cancer in a new interview on Gothamist, with the man we call MCA also giving an update on the status of the Beasties’ album The Hot Sauce Committee, Pt. 1. “We’re just figuring that out right now. But hopefully, it looks like it’ll be coming out early part of next year,” Yauch said. “I don’t know that it’s official yet, but that seems to be the direction we’re moving in.”

  • John Frusciante Quits Red Hot Chili Peppers with "No Drama"

Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante has confirmed that he has “quit” the band, writing in a MySpace blog post, “To put it simply, my musical interests have led me in a different direction.” The Peppers are reportedly working on their follow-up to 2006’s Stadium Arcadium, and rumors began circulating last week that Frusciante had permanently left RHCP and was replaced by guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, who along with Frusciante toured with the band in 2007 and also appeared on Frusciante’s 2009 solo album The Empyrean. Frusciante clarifies in his MySpace post that he actually left the band over a year ago when they were on indefinite hiatus.

  • Spitz’s “Bowie: A Biography” provides an exhaustive account of rock n’ roll rebel

With a plethora of David Bowie biographies on book shelves (but none written by the man himself), Marc Spitz certainly had his work cut out for him. But like any seasoned reporter (his credits include Spin, New York Times, Maxim, Nylon and Blender), he takes to the task with several interviews of secondary sources and scours the Bowie annals for a handful of new tidbits and an era by era analysis. Of course, the trick to capturing this chameleon’s life in pages will always be keeping up with his many personalities, but the author starts from his shy school boy days through his recent health scare and christening of The Arcade Fire as the next “it” act.

With 12 Grammy Awards to her name, Alicia Keys has more than proven her artistic merit and staying power. Come her fourth studio CD The Element of Freedom (J-Records), she churns out a sonically conscious batch of R&B-infused pop that’s not only amongst her most provocative to date, but also amongst her most infectious. Hits already include “Doesn’t Mean Anything” and “Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart,” which are sure to forecast a prosperous new year for the neo-soul star.

  • Dylan's Christmas in the Heart gives beyond performance

The several reviews so far on the new Bob Dylan Christmas cd, Christmas in the Heart are, for the most part, accurate.   Dylan’s craggy, corrosive vocals has work well with his own introspective works (Modern Times, Love and Theft), but the traditional Christmas in the Heart  material strains Dylan's abilities.   His vocals collide discordantly with the cd's razor-sharp musicianship and the gleefully retro 1940s-era background singers.

More grunting than singing, Dylan butchers such traditionals as “Do You Hear What I Hear,” “Oh Come All Ye Faithful”  and the Ella Fitzgerald signature "Christmas Island."    Christmas of the Heart is not the most harmonic of holiday music.

But all is not bad on this CD.

  • "Death in Love" straddles fine line between art and pornography

There are times in movies when explicit sex scenes are not only necessary, but also important to the development of the film and its characters. In Death in Love, however, that’s not really the case. The film tells the tale of how a mother’s (Jacqueline Bisset) relationship with a German doctor as a young Jewish girl would forever influence the course of her family’s lives. Uniquely enough, none of the characters have a name, but the movie manages to work just fine without them.

  • Andrew McMahon discusses his new DVD, Dear Jack

When Jack’s Mannequin’s debut, Everything in Transit, was issued in August 2005, singer-pianist Andrew McMahon had more on his mind than promoting the album. He had just been diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and was about to undergo extensive treatment that would include a bone marrow transplant. As a result of the treatment, he had to receive numerous injections and lost all his hair. It was grueling procedure but it paid off and his leukemia went into remission. As a result, McMahon’s emo-pop band has become active again and spent the past year touring with Weezer and the Fray. McMahon’s battle with leukemia is all documented on Dear Jack, a new DVD that he has released. He phoned in last week to talk about both the disc and his future plans for Jack’s Mannequin.

Judging from the DVD, it looks like you started filming as soon as you were diagnosed. Did you plan from the beginning to release the footage to the public or was that decision made later?

Oh, it was definitely made after the fact. That footage is the first of the hospital stuff that I shot but I had been shooting stuff for six months before that moment. When I got the camera, I was like, “Okay, let’s do this.” At that moment, I planned on filming the whole thing as some kind of record. I don’t think there was much intention. It was a cloudy period of time. I’d be lying if I said otherwise.

  • Update: Steve Albini's Charity Drive

Earlier this week, we reported that a rule change from the U.S. Postal Service threatened Chicago producer Steve Albini's annual charity Christmas gift drive. But the Second City's annual benefit for Albini's Letters to Santa program is going ahead as planned, and it's got some impressive indie rock star-power lined up. The Second City That Never Sleeps show, which goes down December 15-16 at the historic Chicago comedy venue, will also feature performances from folks like Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, the Mountain Goats, and Robbie Fulks. As usual, there will be an auction to win a private show from Tweedy.

  • “Star Wars” lights up the concert stage thanks to massive orchestra and C-3PO

If there’s any movie that needs no introduction, “Star Wars” takes the cake thanks to its larger than life special effects, instantly recognizable characters, iconic storyline and enduring legacy that’s literally touched multiple generations of fanatics. And while George Lucas’ masterpiece sextet of films is literally the most famous franchise in motion picture history, much of the magic belongs to composer John Williams. During the aptly title “Star Wars In Concert” tour, both creators’ works were on display, thanks to clips from both the original trilogy and prequels earning big screen treatment, alongside a massive and technically precise symphony.

  • Invictus is an Oscar caliber film

As much as Morgan Freeman embodies South African President Nelson Mandela in Clint Eastwood’s new film, Invictus, his tendencies to pontificate are a bit much. The guy rarely says anything that’s not deeply profound and moving. Still, Invictus has many inspirational moments. It commences as Mandela is released from prison in 1994 and subsequently elected president. He takes an interest in the mostly white South African rugby team because he thinks their success could unite a country divided by race. The problem is that the team isn’t very good.

  • Girl Talk Reissues: Benefit and Pay-What-You-Want

The ADD mash-up monster Greg Gillis, known to the world as Girl Talk, made his name with the 2006 album Night Ripper, a marathon of chopped-up pop samples that moved so quickly between songs and genres that we all had to struggle to keep up. On December 8, Illegal Art will issue Night Ripper on vinyl for the first time (180-gram double LPs, that is), so we'll really be able to hear every sonic detail of that Biggie Smalls/Elton John meeting of the minds.

  • Motion City Soundtrack Ready to Ignite 'Dino'-mite

After releasing its first two records on indie label Epitaph, pop-punk band Motion City Soundtrack signed a multiple-album deal with Columbia in late 2006, months before releasing its final Epitaph effort, 2007's "Even If It Kills Me." With its Columbia debut, "My Dinosaur Life," set for release Jan. 19, the band's team is working to balance its new major-label status with the independent, grass-roots approach that got Motion City Soundtrack its start.

  • Record Store Spotlight: Pick up Chris Brown and Timbaland at Music City of Opelousas

As one of this year’s biggest public relations disasters, Chris Brown’s become a bad boy of R&B known even more for the headlines than his music. But the incredibly famous turned infamous artist is attempting a comeback throughout Graffiti (Jive) with a little help from guest artists like Lil Wayne, Trey Songz, Swizz Beatz and others. Controversy aside, Brown’s no stranger to the charts and will likely land somewhere towards the top, if only for curiosity’s sake.

    [caption id="attachment_3673" align="alignleft" width="141" caption="Fool's Gold"]Fool's Gold[/caption]

For us here in the Midwest, seasonal affect disorder—a depressive/anxiety condition caused by a lack of sunlight during winter—is a concern. Exercise, antidepressants, vitamin D all have been prescribed to combat SAD. I suggest an additional supplement: a daily listening to the self-title debut CD by Fool’s Gold.

  • Weezer's Rivers Cuomo Remains Hospitalized After Bus Crash

In a harrowing post on Weezer’s official Website, band pal Karl Koch details the tour bus accident that injured frontman Rivers Cuomo severely enough to force the cancellation of the band’s remaining December tour dates. Cuomo, who Koch reports remains hospitalized, suffered three cracked ribs, “painful internal damage” and a lower leg injury; band assistant Sarah Kim fractured a lower vertebrae and two ribs; the bus’ other passengers — Cuomo’s wife, two-year-old daughter and her nanny — and driver were not injured.

  • “$5 A Day” makes for a solid DVD rental instead of a trip to the theatre

A bit of a stretch from some of his more well known roles, Christopher Walken does an excellent job in this memorable father-son road trip movie. The story begins as the son of a con artist, Flynn (Alessandro Nivola) sees his life falling apart as a result of the connection he once had with his father Nat (Walken), who comes back to haunt him. After a series of people in his life finesse things he sought to hide come back to haunt him, he’s also greeted with the news of his ailing father’s wishes to undergo experimental medical treatment in New Mexico. The request is initially ignored, until Flynn realizes he has nothing left of his new life and goes home.

  • Everybody's fine isn't quite family friendly

If you’re thinking Everybody’s Fine, the new film starring Robert DeNiro as an aging old man who sets off on a road trip to try to reconnect with his kids, is a good family film, you might want to think again. Based on a 1990 Italian film, it retains a European feel, especially in the dream sequences. Frank decides to take his road trip after his children, now adults, all cancel their plans to visit him, claiming they are too busy to come out for the weekend.

  • Hear 40 Minutes of Fugazi Stage Banter

Back when they were an active touring unit, Fugazi were one of the most awe-inspiring live bands on the planet. For more than a decade, they toured hard, never charging more than single-digits for tickets, never playing any non-all-ages venues, and putting on a dizzily great show everywhere they went. It's pretty amazing how long they were able to keep that whole enterprise up.

  • Blue-eyed soul (and some surprises) for any season at McDonald’s “Soundstage” taping

Now that he's been in the music business nearly forty years, Michael McDonald can pull from a massive bag of tricks when he shapes his set lists. On the most obvious fronts, there's his time in the Doobie Brothers through several solo smashes, not to mention some collaborations with Steely Dan, tipping his hat to Motown, and in the case of this particular concert, several Yuletide tunes. Though Halloween hadn't hit when he set up shop at the always up close and engaging "Soundstage," his special in support of the new This Christmas (Razor & Tie) will fit perfectly alongside other holiday programming.
