LMFAO
The Party Rock never stops for LMFAO
By Andy Argyrakis
Better known as LMFAO, the electro/hip-hop duo featuring Redfoo and Sky Blu, is quickly becoming one of the most respected remix partnerships in the club scene. Between working their wizardry around current cuts from Fergie, Kanye West, Katy Perry and Lady GaGa, hardly a second goes by on a Saturday night when an LMFAO beat isn’t percolating from some stereo speaker. And the pair’s original material is quickly generating just as much heat in hopes of turning the globe into an unending celebration.
“Our perspective is point blank we are trying to make this world a party planet,” Redfoo says via phone. “And it’s deep because if we were a party planet, that would mean everybody would be having a fun time, dancing and celebrating all the time. Having a party is the celebration of life to us and that’s our goal. When we set out do this, we wanted to make up-tempo music like Michael Jackson, Madonna, Rick James and Prince — the stuff we loved as kids — and we wanted to get back to have that fun. There’s some meaningful stuff too, like relationship songs, but [partying] is the whole vibe.”
Take for instance “I’m In Miami Bitch,” the lead single off the troupe’s aptly named debut disc Party Rock, which finds the fellas signed to will.i.am Music Group/Interscope Records and quickly giving the Black Eyed Peas a run for its money.
“It was the first song we did where we experimented,” Redfoo says of “Miami.” “We never used sounds with the ’80s retro thing before, but after DJ-ing a lot, we knew we needed something really catchy. But it’s not like traditional hip-hop where there are a lot of lyrics being repeated. It was actually a song we wanted to make to seduce girls and the songs basically saying, ‘Hey, I think you’re kinda cute.’ It was totally selfish and wasn’t meant to be a hit record, but more like a tool to meet people and tell them we like to play naked Twister, drink all day, play all night and are always ready to party.”
Even though Redfoo isn’t shy about his affinity for fun, he admits LMFAO is just as much a business as it is a creative outlet, meaning craziness must be balanced with scheduling and self-control (well, at least a little).
“For instance, we will party all night [on stage], take a flight at 6 a.m. every morning, sleep on the plane or crack some jokes, then go to the hotel until we perform again around midnight,” he says. “Sometimes there’s a pre-party if girls want to hang, but other than that, we’re handling the business. You may find me working on spreadsheets or talking to management, but I could be doing it poolside sipping champagne, so it’s a constant.”
The lavish lifestyle is nothing new for the LMFAO hype man. Believe it or not, he was a major player in the Wall Street game before throwing caution to the wind and pursuing his musical love as top priority, thanks in part to a little prodding from a certain Black Eyed Pea.
“It’s very inspiring to see will.i.am blow up,” relates Redfoo. “The facts are he recorded his Interscope demo at my house and I actually forgot, but then he said it in an interview. I was still soul searching at that point and was actually trading stocks. I used to wear a suit and was playing golf. Could you see me in a suit? I caught up with will.i.am at that point and he was like, ‘What the hell are you playing golf for?’ and I was like, ‘It’s a great game’ and he just thought I was an alien. But I always looked at him as an inspiration and the fact that he stuck with something.”
And according to LMFAO’s ambitious outlook on the future, it’s quite likely the duo could be skyrocket to a similar degree of stardom within the not so distant future.
“It’s like we’re sailing to find land and the first piece of land we want to see is being number one,” adds Redfoo. “I feel like right now Black Eyed Peas are number one, but we want to get there and be comfortable in our own shoes on the way there. I feel our lives and lifestyle are very entertaining and needs to be out there, but music is only one way to get it and we want to combine the audio and visual together, like a Purple Rain or The Breakfast Club. So whatever comes first out of all those ideas, and also, to not just be leaders in a sound, but to always be thinking ahead about the next style.”
