Little White Lies
Campus Correspondent review by Paul Lewis,
Eastern Washington University
The Texas-based band that scored hits in the ‘90s with songs “The Way” and “You’re An Ocean” return strong with its new album Little White Lies (four years after its previous project Keep Your Wig On). The album features twelve songs that bring back the power pop flavor that the band is known for. Unlike the previous hit albums, this effort features a more mature and stripped down sound.
The addition of the piano by Tony Scalzo gives the album an extra dimension. The vocal performances by Miles Zuniga and Tony Scalzo are perfect and as clear as ever. The title track of the album is catchy and sets the tone for the entire album with a solid beat and harmonizing. Other standout songs are the frenetic “White Noise,” the album’s first slower paced song “The Malcontent (The Modern World)” and the flamenco sounding “Angeline.”
The drawbacks to this album are minimal, though some songs sound a bit repetitive. Even though tunes like “Little White Lies and “The Malcontent (The Modern World)” sound great, playing them back to back is like listening six minutes of the same song. The other problem is that it is a short album with most songs around the three minute mark with the only four minute song being “Soul Radio.” Issues aside, plus a set of tour dates around the country, all that needs to be said is “welcome back, fellas, you’ve been gone too long.”
