Music Soulchild sticks to familiarity with his fifth release, OnMyRadio (Atlantic). The majority of the tracks on OnMyRadio are mid-tempoed jams with sexy melodies and funky bass lines. “I Wanna Be” is passionate, sincere and graced with a couple verses from Damien Marley, who along with Musiq Soulchild, pleads with a particular someone about being in a sincere relationship, not just a one night stand.
The album takes an unexpected turn with “Money Right,” a dance track with a racing beat, accented by a reverbed clap and frantic vocals. The singer explains how he wishes he could buy his girl more, but just doesn’t have the means. The track is similar to John Legend’s newfound sound, but is artistically legit enough to work.
With that said, the relatively successful soul singer stretches his talents too far on the album’s first single “Radio,” which is more of a loopy club banger than a nighttime soother. With heavy hitting electronic bass bombs, Super Mario sounds and an unrelenting chopped click, “Radio” is just too cliché. Throughout the song he brags about material things, while telling his girl not to touch the radio. The track’s production and lyrics just happen to represent everything that was and is wrong with hip-hop.
