Lily Allen
It’s Not Me, It’s You
Review By Matt Conner
She’s at it again. “Why can’t we all just be honest/Admit to ourselves that everyone’s on it/From worn politicians to young adolescents,” sings Lily Allen on the lead track, “Everyone’s At It,” on her sophomore LP. The UK sharp-tongued lass is back to dish out equal doses in all directions while musically keeping it hip and relevant. In other words, she’s indie pop’s princess.
The first single, “The Fear,” finds Allen as cool as ever during a spoken word verse and Thompson Twins-styled chorus. The tune “22” infectiously swings its way to repeat listens with cultural insights into the search for love and belonging. She turns playful on “Never Gonna Happen” and wistful on “Chinese.” The former features Looney Tunes squeals and zips while the latter casts lonely stares out a rainy day window. The beauty of It’s Not Me is that Allen is equally at home in both places, and her global presence is cemented with this fantastic import.
