Impending Doom
Sunday, February 15, 2009
The Marquee/ Tempe, AZ

Review by Jim Simmons, Arizona State University

“Gorship” is yet another word categorizing yet another genre within a genre within another. Hard rockers Impending Doom cites “Gorship” as “Our way of worshiping God through our gore sounding music.” Take some metal, add a little death, add a little “gore” and even a touch of worship and you have a recipe for a group, that despite its strange classification, has landed on the metal scene quickly and loudly since its debut release Nailed. Dead. Risen. with Facedown Records in 2007.

The Riverside, CA based-band appeared in Arizona at Tempe’s Marquee Theatre last Sunday slotting a coveted spot on tour with Bleeding Through, The Acacia Strain and As Blood Runs Black…. truly a death fest from start to finish. The rookies, who were placed first in the line-up, appeared with matching shirts with a “repentagram” (a modification of the symbol commonly associated with Satanism, and of course, metal) printed on the back. The band often moved in almost choreographed fashion turning backs to the crowd multiple times to showcase the new symbol.

All spiritual convictions aside, Impending Doom received a strong response, opening with fan favorite “My Nemesis.” The band progressed onward with its blast beats, pig squeals, bellowing death growls and drop something guitars to darken the tones, blacken the mood and lay the foundation for the bands to follow. The doomsters showcased many of the songs featured on an upcoming release, including, “Anything Goes,” with drummer Chad Blackwell offering his best work, including a kick drum beat repeating at a rate that should not be humanly possible. Other notables included Silence The Oppressors, and the title track to upcoming album, The Serpent Servant, which is due out March 31st.
