Britney Spears
Circus

Review By John Reed

Now that Spears is seemingly got her personal life back together, it’s sad to report she’s not delivered the musical goods. Following the formula of last year’s semi-successful Blackout, Circus is the same old Spears with the helium-sounding vocals, songs with lyrics so dumb it’s embarrassing, and the now-overdone use of electronic dance beats on saccharine ballads. “Womanizer,” like last year’s Gimme More,” is the lead off cut and the only sort of interesting tune on the CD.

“Leather and Lace” isn’t a cover of the Stevie Nicks/Don Henley classic duet, but another trip down the street of dopey lyrics. The opening line “French fingertips, red lips, bitch is dangerous, cotton candy kiss, can't wait for my sugar rush” really makes you scratch your head and wonder who the hell approved this drivel. The title cut finds Spears boasting of her talents as a live performer but if you saw the 2007 MTV Music Award debacle or her 15-minute long live shows that followed a few months later, you know she has no right to brag.
