The Ting Tings
We Started Nothing

Campus Correspondent Review By Kate Seesholtz

British pop due The Ting Tings have released their debut album We Started Nothing, riding the wave of bands finding stardom through Apple commercials. You might recognize the catchy first single “Shut Up and Let Me Go” from its spot in a colorful iPod ad. The song sets the tone for the rest of the album, an upbeat, electric pop-inspired mix of girl fronted energy. Lead singer Katie White brings a fresh voice to a music scene saturated with love obsessed girls. The Ting Tings songs focus intently on the wrong doings of men, such as mellower “Traffic Light” and the newly released single “That’s Not My Name.”

The album starts off with another song thrust into the spotlight by Apple entitled “Great DJ.” This was available as a free download on iTunes, and while its chorus can feel a bit repetitive and grating at times, it’s a stand out on the album. Repetitive beats reminiscent of techno are the driving force behind We Started Nothing. While this works well for a niche audience, many listeners might quickly tire of their simplistic lyrics. Nonetheless (and despite the album name stating otherwise), The Tings Tings have definitely started something.
