Girl Talk
Feed the Animals
Review By Chris Pacifico
When it comes to detailing a track by Greg Gills (Girl Talk), it can be tricky since there’s an average of 20 songs cut and spliced together throughout his tracks. Don’t call him a “mash-up” artist. A glorified looper, maybe. After all, can you really say that you’re going to see a concert when all you’re there for is to see some skinny and sweaty dude hunched over a laptop? Apparently so, since Gillis’ shows pack ’em in worldwide and make for the most raucous of dance parties.
His status of being a legit musician is a whole other debate for another time but one thing remains certain is that this kid has an ear for splicing up generations of pop songs from classic rock radio, cheesy one hit wonders, guilty pleasures of time immemorial with today’s crunk rap. Finding a way to fuse in Michael Sambello’s “Maniac” and using Butthole Surfers as a bridge into Rod Stewart’s “Young Turks” on “Shut the Club Down” is a feat deserving of three cheers. No matter what, Gillis reminds us all that perhaps the youth of today can connect with their parent’s generation in an odd way through his music.
