Miley Cyrus
Breakout
Review By John Reed
Undeniably, the current teen (or tween) queen Miley Cyrus (and her alter ego Hannah Montana) had one of the most successful tours last year with a ticket that wsa nearly impossible to get. While the craze for all things Cyrus/Montana should be cooling down soon (the pre- and early-teen fan base she attracts is the most fickle and likely to move on quickly), she hasn’t lost momentum as her latest product, Breakout, debuted at the top of the charts. So the world will have to endure the Cyrus virus a bit longer than some were hoping.
Breakout is an attempt to forge out in a more lite-rock popish direction but gets lost quickly. The first single, “7 Things,” is annoying with its chanting feign–rock chorus and shows that Cyrus may be trying to move in the direction of Avril Lavigne. The song is unoriginal with lyrics that sound straight out of an ’80s B-movie soundtrack and a chorus that kind of cops the title of a certain ’90s Heath Ledger flick. The rest of the CD isn’t better than generic pop and ballads aimed at the under-13 crowd. A cover of “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” could have been a good move for Cyrus, but her atrocious delivery ranks this as the worst ’80s covers since Britney desecrated “I Love Rock and Roll.”
